My wife and I have no children of our own, but I sure wanted to
participate in the wonderful special event, "KIDS DAY". So I set up my
radio station in my motor home, located out in the driveway. I called up
a few neighbors, and invited them to bring their children over, to speak
with the other kids, over my ham radio. David (age 8) and his dad
Richard, showed up first. I tuned around heard Lorin and his dad,
Kevin, calling "CQ Kids day", from Illinois. I answered his call, and
then handed over the mic to David, to exchange favorite colors and ages.
We also told them of the ice storm we were having here in Greenville,
SC. Then Jennifer (age 11) and her sister (age 9) showed up, and also
spoke with Lorin . I tuned around again, and we all then spoke to Ace
and his father Jay, up in New York. Ace told us they had a foot of snow
on the ground already! After the kids gave their "73", Jay and I
started talking, I told him I knew what snow was all about, because I use
to live up in Cleveland. He told me he was also from there, and we soon
discovered, that we both had graduated from the same High School - Small
World! Later on Jessie (age 14) came over. He first spoke with Nicki in
Indiana. I tuned around again and heard "W5RRR" clearing with another
young station, I called to him and he asked me to go down two. I quickly
tuned down two and called again, then he returned my call! How lucky!
We spoke to Kent "W5RRR", at the "Johnson Space Center ARC" in Houston,
Texas. He told Jessie a lot about the SAREX program, and how they
licensed astronauts at their club, for shuttle missions. Jessie was
quite interested in all he had to say. We didn't worked too many
stations, because of the weather, and the children were getting cold. But
all the kids, young and old alike, sure had a GREAT TIME!
