Howdy from Texas y'all,
Today was a good day for ham radio! Amateur radio station K1OJ was operated
by a guest operator. His name is Travis Quarles and he is 11 years old.
Travis had come to the 'shack' to participate in the Kid's Day Operating
Event sponsored by the Boring Amateur Radio Club of Boring, Ore. Travis has
been around radios for a long time and has even talked to some of the locals
on the repeaters while in the car with his Dad. However, today was
different. Today he would pull up a chair beside Dad and share the operators
position in front of the 'big' radio. With a preprinted 'crib sheet' in
hand, (thanks Dad), three or four practice runs, more than adequate
operating instructions for the microphone PTT button and a small case of
nervousness, he was off in quest of his 5 QSO goal. "What band do we use
Dad?" "We'll use 20 meters just like the 'Big Boys' son." "Will we tune
around to find someone calling CQ Dad?" "No son. We will stake claim to
quiet frequency and call CQ like the 'Big Boys' would do." "CQ Kids Day CQ
Kids Day this is Kilo One Oscar Japan calling CQ Kids Day" "K1OJ this is
Kilo Two Zulu Yankee K2ZY." Operating at K2ZY was Ace. He was in New York.
His favorite color is blue. He is also 11 years old. And so into the log
book goes Travis's first HF QSO. There was a lot of activity. The 'Big Boys'
were working their way up and down the band giving out contacts to the kids.
The kids were plentiful and their high pitched voices could be heard loud
and clear on both 20 and 10 meters. It was fun. It will be memorable.
Many thanks to the organizers and participants.
