I've read this message a few times and decided to comment after all.
Perhaps some history is in order. The Kid's Day "operating event" was
started about four years ago by contester extraordinaire N6TR. Its original
name was the "Kid's CONTEST". Obviously, it has never been a true contest,
nor will it ever become one. Occasionally (once this January), my Sarah
actually called "CQ Kids Contest", probably because that is what she
originally learned.
Does that cause you to gasp?
I certainly don't think it should. Anyway, I am glad you enjoyed the event.
I sure did!
Happy New Year to all...

This was a most interesting event. My son Matthew (age 9) and my daughter
Mallory (age 6) both participated. This was their first time to operate
Daddy's station...using Daddy's brand new HF verticle (thank you Santa).
We
didn't make many contacts, but my kids really seemed to enjoy the activity.
Here's our log:
Band Time Station Age Name QTH Color Operator
20 18:53 K2ZT 11 Ace NY blue Matthew
10 19:35 K1ZM 7 Lucy MA pink Mallory
10 20:14 K6XX 7 Sarah CA blue Matthew
10 20:35 N1ZPC 6 Danny ME red Mallory
I noticed that there were quite a few kids calling "CQ CONTEST". I even
heard several control ops instructing the kids to call "CQ CONTEST" <gasp>.
According to what I read in QST, this was an operating event -- not a
contest. My kids repeatedly asked about the prizes they could win in this
"contest" <hi hi>. Note: No complaints here...just an observation.
BTW, children learn by example. Set a good example for them to follow.
