[kids] Kid's Day Entry from N3AWS

Sat, 1 Jan 2000 21:02:30 EST

This was the second Kid's Day entry for my daughter Jennifer. Jeni is 7
years old and is in the second grade. We used a barefoot Icom 706 with
indoor antennas for 10 and 2 meters. Most contacts were made by me calling
"CQ Kid's Day" while Jeni played with her Pokemon Gameboy in the background.
Once contact was established, Jeni would come to the mike and give her
exchange. We only operated a bit over an hour, but more than tripled our
number of QSOs over our previous attempt.

Our exchange was:

" Jennifer.....age 7.....apple green.....Ocean Springs, MS"
"Jim.....age 42.....red.....Ocean Springs, MS"

Our station log follows:

1900.....K1IR.....Sander.....10.....White.....MA
1909.....K1RX.....Jonathan.....12.....Blue.....NH
1910.....KM6XV.....Larry.....38.....Blue.....CA
1912.....VA3ERN.....Ernie.....XX.....XX.....Ontario
1919.....KD4HTS.....Steve.....40.....XX.....Biloxi, MS--2 meter FM
1920.....KC5YPS.....Randy.....XX.....Red.....Slidell, LA--2 meter FM
1921.....KC5YPS.....Michelle.....Picachu (favorite Pokemon).....Slidell,
LA--2 mter FM
1943.....N5XGI.....Kim.....70.....XX.....Ocean Springs, MS--2 mter FM
2004.....K0XE.....Barry.....XX.....Red.....Boulder, CO
2004.....K0XE.....Colleen.....6.....Green.....Boulder, CO
2014.....KB4YLK.....Dennis.....XX.....XX.....Colorado Springs, CO

All contacts were on 28.3 MHz unless otherwise noted.

Once again we had a great time and this seems to be a fantastic way to
introduce ham radio to youth. I hope to operate Kid's Day portable at Jeni's
school someday--Field Day style--to try to let even more kids join the fun.

73, Jim N3AWS
