This was our first experience with Kid's Day. My youngest son, 12 year
old Alain, operated for a few hours after we got finished the chores we
had set out for the day.
Alain has been around contesting quite often as we are very active in
most contest as a multi-operator station. He often grabs a second set of
earphones so he knew what he was in store for. This meant less coaching
and I think he felt this was "his" contest.
In about two hours he made 24 QSOs. Operators ranged from 2 years old to
55 years old. 13 different states. It was great to hear young voices
trying their darnest to make the QSOs. 9 YL operators in the 24
contacts. The youngest Op was Alan at K8DX. Only 2 years old!! We too
worked K7RAT and wish we had know to watch NBC for the news piece. Nice
job by Tree and Joseph I understand. Dave, at K4XS, sounded like a
seasoned contestor. Great work at 12 yrs. old. Any chance of him moving
to New England?? Someone tell him on 80 meters it's 3dB louder to Europe
up here.
Enough from me. It was fun and I am sure we will do it again but I hope
Alain has his own call by the next Kid's Day.
Now for his own soapbox comments:
I thought that Kid's Day was fun and a learning experience. I always
wanted to actually operate on my own. I always wondered what it would be
like to push down on the foot pedal and talk to another kid in training
to become a ham. I felt alot more comfortable talking to kids around my
age. Right now I am in the process of becoming an Amateur and studying
my code. I hope I get my license before my Dad's next big contest.
