[Mldxcc] Novice Q: Just how does card checking work?

KI6T checked my cards for DXCC Phone last fall, and I had just enough to
qualify -- as ARRL confirmed.  I have now managed to work DXCC on 20m, still
need a dozen cards to confirm.  I have some 233 band countries confirmed by
card, with 137 entities total.  That suggests I have some 133 band countries
confirmed beyond the 100 I confirmed for DXCC.  When does one have their
cards checked?  When you have a band complete, or as you go along?

So, would someone help me understand the typical practice for card checking.
ARRL sent me a list of what they confirmed.  I am slowly...thinking...I
should take cards to Visalia to get what I have checked and on my record.
It was quite convenient to have Gary check my cards over a cold drink here
in Fair Oaks, and that would be fine.

I guess I am more interested in the "normal" process than the where.
