Special Announcement
A group of amateur radio operators have announced a special one-day
operating event and potential new entity activation from the San
Serriffe Islands, specifically for the DX portion of the annual Poisson
'd' Avril Contest.
San Serriffe is a small, little known and mostly uninhabitted island
nation, in the Indian Ocean, near the Seychelles Islands, but owing to
an unusual combination of ocean currents and erosion its exact position
does vary. (There was an erroneous report in the recent past that the
QTH was in the Bering Sea).
For those not familiar with the nation, Wikipedia reports that "San
Serriffe is an archipelago consisting of two main islands and a number
of smaller ones. Of the larger islands, the more northerly (the Caissa
Superiore or Upper Caisse) is roughly round and the more southerly (the
Caissa Inferiore or Lower Caisse) round but with a promontory extending
south-westwards from the south-east, at Thirty Point. The two major
islands are separated by the Shoals of Adze, dominated by Cap Em. The
capital, Bodoni, is in the centre of the Caissa Superiore, and is served
by an international airport. It is linked by fast highways to the major
ports, including Port Clarendon. However since the rise of the personal
computer industry, Arial in the Lower Caisse has acquired increasing
importance."
The call sign to be used has not been announced, partially because San
Serriffe has not yet been assigned one by the ITU. Also due to the
known problems with San Serriffe's constant movement due to the erosion
effects of the ocean, there are some doubts as to whether or not the
ARRL DXCC desk will approve the operation as a new entity. But as all
true DX'ers know, WFWL!
A partial list of operators for the San Serriffe DXpedtion include many
descendants from the original colonists (better known locally as
"colons") and from those who have mixed parentage from both the original
colonists and the natives (aka "semi-colons.") These well known calls
include RG8X, RG8U (both well known from last year's activation of Coax
& Cable), 1S1GT (from the Sylvania Island DXpedition), and of course
AP1RIL, FO0L, and others.

correspondent for Time-Life publications and one time baseball "phenom,"
