How's DX? Short path or long path? Who worked VU4?
In the Daily DX this morning there is a short article that mentions "Aurora
Levels". First time that caught my attention. I did a search and found an
aurora forecast site from Alaska: http://www.auroraforecast.com/ . The
report is for an aurora level of 6-10 today:
*******************
There is currently a very strong southward pointing Bz value of 3 nT that is
canceling out the protective effects our Earth's magnetic field. The
increased southward Bz value forces open a 'door' in our magnetosphere
letting energy particles from the solar wind easily penetrate our
atmosphere. This is an excellent indicator for the current availability of
active aurora.
Aurora Activity Level 6/10: Aurora borealis activity is currently moderate
to elevated. Weather permitting, good northern lights displays will be
visible directly overhead from Dawson City to Watson Lake and Whitehorse.

So, I'm wondering if this is one of the many reasons I'm not hearing VU4
(OK, besides the wimpy antenna and that I have a ridge to the northwest that
blocks low angles towards 320 degrees). I'm guessing that when aurora
levels are high, polar and near polar routes are more difficult.
I'm curious about VU4 success. Long path or short path? Superstation or
moderate station?
