Hi Folks,
Sorry for the long delay, but I finally have sorted out the results of our club's Field Day effort this year. Before I launch into a few personal observations, here are the numbers:
Band CW SSB Total
80 146 115 261
40 635 322 957
20 476 730 1,206
15 50 19 69
6 0 59 59
2 0 47 47
GOTA 93 154 247
Totals 1,400 1,446 2,846
Scoring:
QSO Points 8,492
Bonus Points 990
Claimed Score 9,482
Folks - that's the highest Field Day score our club has made in the past four years. And - we did this with only 8 operators running four stations. Not too shabby!!
Last year's score was 8,902, which landed us in 13th place in Class 2A, third place in California in that class.
One of our discoveries this year was the ability to run two stations on 20 meters at the same time. That will be a necessity over the next three or four years until Cycle 24 improves conditions to the point where we no longer need to do this. Several of us also discovered the ability of "stubs" to dramatically reduce inter-station interference instead of bandpass filters. Our thanks to Jeff, WK6I, for this introduction to a topic that I have heard about since my early days as a ham operator, but never saw in practice until now.
The absolute highlight of the weekend, though, was watching our two teenage guests making their very first QSOs on the GOTA station. One of them is in his senior year at Placer High and was so impressed with his experience, that he is going to earn his amateur license as part of his senior project this coming school year. While we can be proud of our score, this is really one of the main purposes of Field Day - introducing the magic of radio to young people. My hearty thanks go out to all of our participants who worked hard to put this all together. I also thank the club for allowing me to be your Field Day Coordinator for another year.
See y'all this coming Saturday at the annual joint NCCC/MLDXCC meeeting in Jackson.
