They were a solid S9 on 30 meters when I worked them.
Got them on the first call on 40 meters.  They were
totally armchair copy on 20 SSB one night at 10 PM when
I worked them there.  On 17 and 15, they were never good
copy in Cupertino.  I had to use the Galt remote base for
sure on those contacts.  All in all, I don't think they
did so bad.  You just had to be there when the band was
open.  The only thing I would criticize is that they worked EU or
JA's when they were booming in here and listened for NA when
they were nearly inaudible here.  They were probably handicapped
by not being able to put out elevated radials over the water
as in most beach operations.  This is not the fault of the SteppIR
vertical.
