During the ARRL 10 meter contest, my ICOM 746 made a loud pop and went
to black. I suspected the PS. Al K0IJ replaced the regulator in the
power supply. I started out in the 160 contest, everything OK. Then POP
and the 746 went to black. oh......!
I sent the radio to Ham Radio Repair Service in TX. The radio was
checked out OK and returned promptly.
During the NAQP with the rate meter showing 150 Q's/hour the stuff hit
the fan again. I reduced power and was able to get back in the contest
about an hour later. Again running 35 Watts the radio died. I
reinstalled my backup radio and because the power cord was too short.
(too many Field Days) I connected to the battery on the UPS system and
continued at about a 23/hr rate. SNORE!
During my dinner brake, I connected the 746 to the battery and
completed the QSO party on 160 with about 50 watts. (There is a huge
difference between the 745 and 746. The 746 has a better receiver,
built in tuner and CAT connections. )
Now, QST pays off.
While breezing through the February QST there is a tip from K1CHW on
page 79, concerning his ICOM 706 and a corroded Molex connector to the
power supply. Check out George's solution. Clean the connector.
I borrowed a Proxy brush from my teeth cleaning tool kit to reach
inside the connecter and clean the male and female connectors. The
brush came out black. I finished up with a light application of silicon
lube, reconnected everthing and the radio is happy again.
The moral of the story is, if you have a radio with molex connectors,
Keep them clean. A simple cleaning would have saved me about a 100-bucks
S/H and a lot of operating time. 73 Ray
