Antennas : 20/40m jumpered dipole up 55 feet (changing the jumper in the rain is fun!).

Soapbox : I have a love/hate relationship with CW. Doubled last year's score for SS CW. I'm gaining on the "love" side.

Too may distractions at the start and before. Work, unexpected family and guests, Murphy included. RF in the shack. Could not transmit on phone for CQWWSSB. Bad attitude<grin>.

Simplified things with a simple 20m dipole, put some of my group purchase K9YC ferrites in the air, and then added 40m wire extensions and a jumper. There was an extended period Saturday when I was playing with antennas--I thought something was broken--very few stations heard. Didn't help the attitude problem<grin>. SWR where it needed to be and no RF in the shack. Then I read about the flares. Antenna played very well (Duh!) for a dipole at 55 feet. I wanted to get the amp on the air but decided to get going barefoot.

Started Saturday around 4 pm local time, so I started on 40m. Got up early Sunday and continued on 40m. As 40m declined, I realized that I needed to change the jumper to go to 20m, and it was raining hard. So, I tried the 40m dipole on 15 and did OK for a bit. Rain slowed, had to go out in the drizzle to address some local "emergencies" and pulled the jumpers. The new antenna pulleys make experimenting more fun, and made jumpers practical.

Rate (if that is what you call it) was at about 10/hour at first, but it actually got fun by the end of the contest. I actually felt relaxed and reasonably satisfied at the end, and that is a first for me and CW. I had a 28 Q/hour and a 10 minute rate of 42/hr. Since I only S&P and usually have to hear the cycle a couple of times before I have the exchange and put in a call, not bad. My rate is increasing. Cut numbers really throw me.

I felt like I could hear better and noise seemed way lower than I remember it. Conditions seemed great when I was on. I seemed to get way fewer calls for repeats and many more first call contacts. Height of the contest was my first 15m contact and "gud sigs". The comment threw me for a moment. I had trouble with some repeat requests and had to send the whole exchange in the interest of time. My apologies. I spotted a few stations hoping that someone would make a contact so I could verify the exchange<grin>.

So, goal was 150 contacts and 15,000 points. Beat that. Nearly doubled last year's score for SS CW (15,594 to 30,240). Progress! Missed adding 100 Qs (179 vs 216). Doable next year.

Need 794 Qs in SS SSB for KB1000. I learned much. Good time.

Lots of PVRC stations out there.

KB!
