Note to self: Follow the SS handbook. Sleep between 1AM and 5AM to
recharge. Don't try to be Bionic Man anymore.
Split Operation.
Saturday at N3ZZ: 606 x 77 = 93,324
Sunday at K6MM: 436 x 80 = 69,760
Totals Qs = 1,042
Score = 163,084
Part One. Started out at Tom's QTH on Saturday. All systems go, and
then the Mother Of All Storms hit the area. Thunder + Lightning +
Wind. Felt like I was back in Syracuse again. The wind and rain in
the Cupertino Foothills was pretty fierce. I thought the screens on
Tom's shack windows were going to be heading for a new home.
Fortunately, no power outage or equipment damage. Had a couple of
keying problems with the 87A that slowed me down. Wound up with more
Qs on 40M than both 15M and 20M combined. Go figure. Just couldn't
get NL, QC, or PR in the log, so missed the sweep. My thanks to Tom
for the use of his great station.
Part Two. Headed home just after midnight. Good -- no storm damage
there either. Took a shower, but still felt wide awake. Got on the
air and -- what a mistake. Should have taken that 3-4 hour nap
instead of logging a handful of Qs on 80M. Headed for 20M at the
first sign of life on the packet cluster. Got a run frequency and
started out great.
But at some point, I got so tired of listening to my own voice CQing
from the K3 DVR -- I took a little break. Nobody was home. Nice and
quiet. Put my head back on the couch for a minute. And woke up 2.5
hours later.
Missed some prime time operating time, including the 40M Rally. What
a dork. Learn something every year.
Thanks for the great KB turnout -- worked many over the weekend. And
special thanks to Chris (N6WM) for pushing the envelope. As a Club, I
think we rallied very well for this one -- should be proud of our
effort.
And, to keep a humorous perspective on all of this, we just have to
remember a Yogi Berra-ism:
"If the world were perfect, it wouldn't be."
73,
John K6MM
