Are you running VE7CC with telnet keep alives set?
How about using the web site DX Summit? It doesn't use telnet
and should be compatible with high latency connections.
Can you get DSL where you are? I have that at my ranch.
They put in a "remote terminal" (not sure if that is the
same as a DSLAM) so that I can connect at a distance of
5 miles from the central office. Now only the distance
to that terminal matters.
Can you get terrestrial wireless internet with a roof top
dish pointed back to town? I used to have that. It
worked OK with telnet once I activated keep alives
and auto reconnect.
