Last year I didn't do very well in CQP with only 167 QSOs and 13,536
points. So this year I decided to make a couple of improvements that I
hope will help me do better. I'm a small pistol, 100 watts on a small
lot, and I have to live within some restrictions.

1. Antennas -- Last year I used inverted V dipoles. This year I
decided to build a 2-element yagi for 15 meters. That's why I skipped
the last MLDXCC meeting, I was busy working on it :-) I must have
done 50 NEC model runs tweaking various dimensions. Here's a photo of
it, just got it up today

How come antennas are so big on the ground but so small up in the air?
: - ) The Moxon has a 16-ft wingspan with a 7 foot boom ... although
very lightweight, it was quite cumbersome, and this about the limit
for me to put up solo. In the next few days I'll put up the dipoles to
give me 20 and 40 meters as well.

2. Rig -- Sold my aging Yaesu FT-990 and bought a Kenwood TS-590.
Definitely a step up in receiver performance. There's no doubt I'll be
able to dig out more stations next week with the 590 than with the
990.

Definitely looking forward to playing radio in CQP next weekend! 73 Jim K6OK
