I'll go Steve one further ...

PLEASE send machine CW!  Pretty much everyone does anyway in contests and
DXing. Occasionally I work someone with a J-38 who doesn't know how to use
it ... or worse someone with a bug who has no clue. Those are the rare
exceptions. While it's fun to play with a J-38 (I did it for a year
professionally - in the Navy), it's much better to use machine sent code
and fill in with as needed with a decent keyer and paddle. Practice with
the paddle!  It takes a while to be decent, but it's well worth the effort.
There's no need to do the J-38 thing if you don't want to.  Speed is not
the issue. Go with your comfort level.

The more you use it, the better you get.

... just back from T33A where I did 100% CW and 99% of that was by machine.
