Dick, I worked N8S (Swains) on 160 with my Cushcraft R-5 vertical and 100 watts on the wrong side of the hill. Never did figure out how that worked at all, the the MP internal tuner loaded it OK.
I haven't even listened for FT5ZM on 160 and 80. I'll take a listen tomorrow morning.

A temporary antenna I used last year was a 60 foot
vertical with 2 top wires that sloped down to the ground.
It seemed to do very well compared to the 90 foot
version, except the bandwidth (predictably) was very
narrow.
An 80 meter dipole should be able to work like my 60
foot vertical by just tying the feedline terminals together
and driving it against ground. You would have the
advantage of not having the drooping top wires.
If you don't get an extremely narrow bandwidth, it indicates
ground losses. But even with a lousy ground, you will
only be down several dB.
