We all know that Dan Craig, N6MJ, is one of the best CW operators on the planet. Just how good is he?
Last weekend, Dan operated in the CQWW CW contest — his first-ever contest from the DX-side.
Operating SO2R, SO-HP, as ZF2MJ from the ZF1A station — using two ICOM 7800’s — Dan racked up 10,223 QSOs for a total claimed score of 17,655,910.
That’s 10,223 QSOs over 48 hours = average of 213 QSOs per hour over the entire contest period !!
The current CQWW CW SO-HP record for North America was set in 2014 by Andy (N2NT) who operated as V47T. His total score: 13,548,784.
Dan’s claimed score of 17,655,910 is 30% higher than the NA record — Amazing.
And for reference…the current CQWW CW SO-HP World Record is held by N5TJ, operating as EA8BH in the year 2000. Score: 18,010,765.
Dan’s claimed score this year is within 2% of the all-time world record for his category. More Amazing.
How did Dan prepare for this great achievement? Among other things:
"In order to prepare for this, I practiced with 2 laptops running MorseRunner on each side over the last few months. I was actually quite surprised how life like MorseRunner was as compared to actual operating. I was able to control the pile up just like as if I was using the program. Having this training was an enormous help.”

Great advice from a humble champion.

Can’t wait to see what Dan does in his next offshore contest.
