I'd agree, there are a good deal of repeaters around and many have
little activity - but my thought was to set up repeaters for our own
use - ones (linked) that we could feel comfortable using for contest
and DX-related activities without getting in the way of other
potential repeater users. This would of course carry over to the
community using this particular linked system having a much better
chance of knowing the users.
I'm thinking that means setting up our own linked repeaters - maybe
it wouldn't take that many - find out where the majority of the users
would be that would want to use them, and maybe just use low-coverage
tactics, combined with linking, to get a decent coverage area with a
lower cost. For example, old Moto repeaters running at member's homes,
with simple antennas, in regular neighborhoods. If enough are linked,
then coverage grows.
I may be showing my ignorance of how things work, if so, please
forgive me - but I do like the idea of having something akin to what
I'm describing, I imagine some others would too if it were feasible.
