[Mldxcc] [NCCC] Microsoft issues rare security update to patch Windows XP - KB4012598

That's real helpful; I have a mothballed XP laptop for field day or 
whatever.  That would lead me to believe that there is also a Windows
7 patch that fixes this.  All my other computers are Win 7 with
automatic updates.  Can I assume that all these Win 7 computers are
already safe?  If that is the case, then what is the explanation
for the widespread ransomware in the news:

1.  They were running XP.
or
2.  They are running Win 7, 8, or 10, but don't have automatic updating
or
3.  The are running bootleg versions of Windows
or
4.  None of the above.
