ARRL DX SSB was not the contest for low power this year. Conditions seemed
awful but interestingly on Saturday afternoon a fairly brief 15m opening to
JA and Pacific produced s9+30 signals. JA3YBK was asking stns to try 10m
and I could just hear something on his run frequency. And Sunday morning,
a very weak 15 meter signal turned out to be CB2-, S-7 after turning the
beam toward Chile. On Sat the Easter Is expedition was easily worked --
occasionally announcing power, so as to count for DX Contest. Very good
op. Interestingly, SA was easily worked on 20 and 15, unusual from here
where my horizon is 4-7 deg toward Chile and Brazil. So optimum path must
have been at higher elevation than usual this weekend. Most impressive op
in contest: P40L.
Eu fairly good on Sat morning on 20, but not so on Sunday. Both mornings,
very few LP Eu stns were heard, a bad sign. Missed Denmark; LZ and E70
stations couldn't hear me. Most other easy ones worked, most on Saturday
morning.
Again, observed this (2nd most) awful operating practice too often: The DX
gives the station's call. . say w9abc?? and the station responds w9abc one
or several times rather than "R" or "QSL". That confuses the calling
station and prolongs the exchange. Amazing how often this happens!
Worse, though against clear instructions from the DX station - surprised
that a few otherwise excellent ops do this. In school these days that
procedure might be tagged as bullying and the offender suspended.
