Good news! I followed Jeff's (WK6I) advice of spraying silicone lube on the winch gears and that, combined with the dose of WD40 suggested by W6SR, finally released the winch brake this morning. Now for some maintenance getting the pulleys lubed on the tower.

Jim,An old used crankup tower without a pull down cable can become a real headache.......I'm sure you will figure it all out, after you block it, climb it, and examine it all, and then figure out what it needs to fix it !They aren't terribly complicated devices, they just need all of what they need to work properly.....Go find out exactly what's not right with yours! You can ask for another thousand ideas from this reflector, most of them will not be what your situation needs, but you can become overwhelmed with well intentioned advice, that has no actual relevance to solving your real actual problem! There is no one on this reflector that can tell you what's wrong with your tower, without being on your site, and systematically evaluating it!Have fun with your challenge!73, Kurt, K7NV----- Original Message -----From: Jim VennemanTo: NCCC Reflector ; MLDXCC LodeSent: Thursday, December 03, 2015 4:53 PMSubject: Re: [NCCC] TowerHi Jim,As suggested by W6SR, I liberally applied WD40 to the winch gears last night. Tried lowering the tower this morning with no luck. I'll check closer for binding up above and try this again soon.Fortunately, the storm isn't packing the winds originally predicted for Auburn today. Thanks for the follow up - I'll be in touch.de Jim WX6V
