Slots are band-modes.  If you work P5/3Z9DX this January or February (wishful thinking but might happen), on 20 phone, 20 CW, 15 phone, 15 RTTY, and 15 CW, you have worked them on five slots.

Range is the number of years you have been working DX since your first contact (I think).
