Well Andreas, it *is* free to use, member or not, world-wide.  Apparently, the BoD thought the concept was a worthy cause, sort of like the Department of Defense's gift to the world of a free unencrypted GPS channel.  They face an IT issue of course, it's an OINO database ["Once In, Never Out"] and will thus grow in size without limit.  When proposed and passed, the BoD had the obligation to fit its costs into the organization budget, and I take a little offense at Tom Gallagher's use of the $200K to lecture us on fundamental economics and accounting, that's the job of the BoD, CEO, and CFO.  If the LoTW operating costs are a problem for ARRL, he was hired to fix it, not complain about it.

I am somewhat discouraged by the fact that, other than for a handful of CQ contests, and despite admittedly weak promises to do so, ARRL has not provided a UI into LoTW to allow other contest sponsors to ask the question, "Is this QSO between two stations, neither of which is me, confirmed?"  I'm fairly sure I could talk the NCCC BoD into signing onto a reasonable annual fee for that service to help the beleaguered WACC Administrator. [:-)  Given the size of Bruce's calendar each month, those fees-for-service might help out the $200K deficit Tom whines about.

LoTW runs at at DEFICIT of $200K/year?

Clublog does a better job and they do it with donations. Maybe there is an incompetence claim to be made here.

There has been a lot of discussion among some NCCC members on this reflector regarding this subject.

Has anyone contacted the other large (and maybe medium and small) clubs to see if similar feelings prevail there? Is there any benefit to uniting a larger, more geographically diverse base of support?

Surprisingly, I received an immediate response from Chris Imlay, ARRL attorney in DC, who was not addressed in my message but got it on forward from NY2RF. It was long and defensive and included a lot of pedantic teaching on board governance principles that I already said in my letter that I was familiar with. I've just launched on a convention trip for an international non-profit, coincidentally similar in structure and size to ARRL. I'm on its Executive Committee; signed some behavior documents when I joined its Board; but it's not restrictive in any uncomfortable sense. When I get a break, I'll respond to Chris, but it doesn't appear to have any chance of changing anything.

I sent my comments today to Lauren Clarke KB1YDD, the current ARRL Development Manager, with cc to all directors in the list recently distributed on this reflector plus CEO NY2RF. I said I will make no further donations and that I am taking them out of my living trust (like a will). I told them how awful I believe the gag order and censure action are and I explained my business/board credentials and my history with respect to ARRL. I expect no response since the gag order (Code of Conduct) explicitly prohibits such ... and that's the point of all this controversy. My language was fairly strong but less so than in my first draft.  I think it fairly reflected the gravity of their ill-advised actions. I am somewhat concerned about possible retribution and I expect to be persona non grata in Newington for the rest of my life. I regret that, having been a friend of the League for over half a century, but I think they need to hear these things from many if they are ever to realize how grievously wrong they are on this one. I will remain a life member and hope to see a tidal change in their attitude, policies and actions during that life, not because of what I said but because of how many others say similar things.
