What a contest! Figured I'd stay home since Cheryl is due this Saturday,
just
in case she was early. Have only had the 40M beam working for the last few
weeks, and haven't really figured out 40M propogation yet. Had the flu
earlier
in the week and was still feeling the effects when the contest started, but
the
more I operated the better I felt! The only bad thing was that for the
first four
hours I had a S7/8 noise level and my early rate really suffered. The only
thing
that saved me was that I had installed a "pseudo Beverage" the day before.
It made it possible to copy the strongest ones over the noise.
When I finished Saturday morning, I sent a talk message to 'AZ for a score
comparison. We had almost the same number of Q's (650), and they had
me by about ten mults. Felt OK for mults, but using my formula of making
60% of the Q's first day and 40% the second, I'd be lucky to break 1000
Q's,
and a very unimpressive score.
For as bad as Friday night was, Saturday was that good! I found 7004 at
2300Z
and never moved until 1100Z. Only a few frequency challenges off to the
sides,
and with a quick XIT & QSY they were gone. I couldn't believe how quite it
was
compared to Friday nite. I just kept bagging away, and tuning on the other
VFO
(the best thing about single band contesting and using an MP).
My results were flip-flopped at 650 first day and 850 the second. Didn't
write down
the exact numbers, but this is close. If only I knew that I could make as
many Q's
on 40M by just installing a 2EL 40, I would have done this first, and
putting the 20M
stuff up later :)
