To the members of NCC and MRRC:
As many of you know, during the IARU Radiosport contest on July 8-9, the
special WRTC "operating event" (competition) will move forward in S5, with
53 special and (hopefully) "equal" stations in and around Bled manned the 53
selected international teams. The WRTC teams can be worked on both modes on
80 through 10 meters, for a total of 10 possible QSO's per team. If you
remember the 1996 competition, the 50+ teams in San Francisco also had
special calls and the pileups were enormous. This year, the same should
hold true -- but the US guys will be fighting all the competition from EU.
Unfortunately, IARU has still not been able to coordinate with the WRTC
sponsors, and working the special S5 guys does not count as a special
multiplier for the IARU score. Consequently, it is not reasonable to try to
seriously compete in IARU and still focus on the WRTC competition,
especially since breaking the S5 piles will be a bit more challenging.
K8CC and (I think) WD8LLD are planning multi-op efforts for IARU. However,
at K8AZ, we're planning a multi-multi effort whose sole goal will be to work
the 53 teams in S5, and to maximize the number of band/mode QSOs with them.
It should be a blast. Based on my discussions with K8CC, we're going to
make this an effort of the "Mad North Coast River Contest Radio Club", i.e.
a joint NCC/MRRC effort, and all members of both clubs are invited to
participate.
I do need to know who plans to attend and when; the contest runs from 8
a.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday. We plan to have 2 stations running
constantly, with up to 4 stations available if the projected participation
warrants. Please drop me a note to let me know if you can join us in
Chesterland, including when you think you'll show up and how long you think
you'll stay. I can be reached either via e-mail (k8az@contesting.com) or
via the DX PacketCluster .
73 & GL in the pileups!
Tom, K8AZ
P.S. On a sadder note, I must report that Val, W8KIC, a founding member of
both MRRC and NCC, was admitted Monday to University Hospitals of Cleveland
with congestive heart failure and pneumonia. I spoke with him today and he
is resting comfortably, and hopes to go home as soon as Friday. Best way to
reach him is vial e-mail at rve2@po.cwru.edu; he should be able to retrieve
it as soon as he gets settled at home.
