What a strange day. My help in getting the rope in the tree for the 80m =
open wire fed dipole cancelled. After a fair bit of time and a lot of =
arm ache, I got a rope sufficiently high in the air to be worthwhile. =
It is now 8 PM Saturday! Put the dipole up and found I did not have =
enough open wire to make it to the house. I know I bought another 100' =
piece, but where the heck is it??? &^*%&* =20
=20
Finally find it at 10... Get the feedline extended, hook it to the rope =
at 35 feet and let it slope down to the fence in the back of the yard. =
Tie it off there... Can't see anything as its a bit dark! So, we now =
have a dipole (sloper) that is 35' high on one end and slopes down to =
about 5 feet off the ground at the other. On a positive note, it is =
actually up.
=20
I stuff the open wire in the window and hook it up to the tuner I =
finally found. I try to turn on the computer and it of course does not =
work! That's OK, I'll send by hand.... It's now 11. ....
=20
I bought a used MP several months ago and have used it on phone once and =
code exactly...... once... During WRTC I wanted to work 15 CW with the =
vertical I had just put up, but found I had no keyer in the house. So, =
I made due with some alligator clips at the time. Since then, I got the =
keyer back from LR's but never bothered to pug it in until.... you =
guessed it, 11 Saturday night. =20
=20
I plug the bencher paddles in and of course they don't work..... Now I =
have to find the flipping manual..... 15 minutes later I find it and =
discover that the cabling is correct but it still does not work..... =
It's acting strange....sends dots, but no dashes.. I finally realized I =
better check the internal 1000MP menu's and what do you know.... It's =
set to "bug" mode. That explains why there were no dashes. =20

It is now 11:34.... Turn on the radio, go to 40... I know its a little =
late for 40, but I have not done a Sprint in many years.... I'm a =
little slow these days.. Ok..... find someone CQ'ing...... Now is the =
moment of truth... I have not done any CW, except for the alligator clip =
thing during WRTC, ARRL CW last February. It shows... I fumble around =
and figure out how to send with a keyer again.. You get spoiled using =
those keyboards during ARRL and WW.... Quickly figured out that 40 was =
not the place to be and went to 80. Tuned everything up, found a clear =
spot and called a very quick CQ. Spent the next few minutes continuing =
to re-learn the code and the Sprint! =20
=20
Worked ND8L, W8KIC, K8DX.... heard several others, N9RV, K3CR, K3LR....
=20
Only worked 18 Q's, but learned quite a bit and actually enjoyed some of =
it.....
=20
I can be on next weekend for the SSB Sprint..... Maybe can work a few =
more since the antenna is mostly up.
=20
By the way.... I was listening on 40 before I was able to work anyone =
and K3LR was as loud as anyone I heard. On 80, the locals were very =
loud, N8VW, KW8N, K8DX were all booming. =20
=20
See you all later.
