Message-ID: Hi to All, It's time to do our SSB thing. We need to follow up our excellent CW score with a great SSB effort. Forget about the splatter induced headaches and focus on high rates. Suppress the agony of split frequency operating and enjoy all those African, Asian and Pacific mults that you never hear on code. Here are a few operating tips for the SSB challenged who want to maximize score in the time available: 1. Run, run, run. S&P only if you must. 2. "Go high young man." Generally the higher you go on 10, 15 or 20m (especially 10m), the easier it is to find a useful run frequency. Great rate can be had above 14.3, 21.4 and 28.75. 3. Don't get sucked into excessive calls on a juicy mult pileup. (Unless you really want that new one to make DXCC Honor Roll). If you don't get thru in 3-4 calls, put the frequency into your XCVR memory and come back to it in 10-15 minutes. Keep a scratch pad handy to help you remember what's in memory. Language Only English language and common international abbreviations can be=20 used - both on SSB and CW. 6. Contest Exchange=20 WRTC stations send signal report and ITU zone.=20 (Finland is in ITU Zone 18). =20 A complete exchange must be logged for each valid QSO. 7. Valid QSOs=20 The same station can be worked once on CW and once on SSB on each=20 band.=20 All CW QSOs must be made within the CW sub-bands mentioned at=20 item "Frequencies / Bands" of these rules. All SSB QSOs must be made within the SSB sub-bands mentioned at=20 item "Frequencies / Bands" of these rules. Cross-band QSOs are not allowed. 8. Soliciting QSOs Soliciting QSOs in any way before the contest period is not allowed. The contest site must be QRT for the last 10 minutes before the contest=20 start. No one may be on the air from the contest site during this 10=20 minute period with any callsign. The operators are not allowed to identify, who they personally are or=20 which team they are. Use of non-amateur radio means of communications (e.g. telephone or=20 Internet) for the purpose of soliciting a contact (or contacts) before or=20 during the contest period is not allowed. QSO schedules arranged before the contest period are not allowed. Use of packet cluster or any other spotting methods is not allowed. 9. Logging Computer logging is required.=20 Each WRTC2002 team must submit their ASCII log files on a diskette=20 to their referee within fifteen (15) minutes after the contest has ended. WRTC2002 official logging programs: CT (K1EA) , TRLog (N6TR). Other logging software may also be used. Cabrillo format is the=20 preferred and recommended file format for the submitted ASCII log file. If the logging software to be used by a team is not CT or TRlog and=20 Cabrillo format is not available, an example of the output ASCII file must=20 be sent to the organizer by 15-May-2002 for final review and=20 acceptance. It is required that the submitted ASCII log file contains one=20 QSO per row and that all QSO data columns are fixed. Use of a 'Super Check Partial' type of feature (e.g. use of callsign=20 databases etc.) is not allowed. If the logging software incorporates this=20 type of feature, it must be disabled.=20 However, the computer may display a 'Check Partial' list based solely=20 upon the callsigns of stations already worked during the contest itself. 10. QSO Points Correct two-way CW or SSB QSOs with stations located in Europe count=20 1 point. Correct two-way CW or SSB QSOs with stations located=20 outside Europe count 2 points. =20 QSOs with maritime (or aeronautical) mobile stations count 2 points. A duplicate QSO on same band and mode counts 0 points. 11. Multipliers DXCC countries and IARU member society HQ stations on each frequency=20 band, once per band regardless of mode. (Note: a HQ station can be a=20 double multiplier, i.e. DXCC-country + IARU member society.) Maritime (or aeronautical) mobile stations do not count as multipliers. 12. Penalty For every bad or wrong call verified by a nominated team of referees, a=20 QSO point reduction worth 2 more similar QSOs will occur. =20 (Total penalty per bad or wrong call =3D 3 x QSO=92s point value). 13. Scoring Score =3D (total number of multipliers) x (total sum of QSO points) 14. Winners WRTC2002 winner: the team with highest score. WRTC2002 first runner-up: the team with second highest score. WRTC2002 second runner-up: the team with third highest score. 15. Judging All decisions of the WRTC2002 Judging Committee are final. 16. Station Setup General In general, the WRTC2002 organizers provide=20 - a tri-band beam for 10/15/20M with a PL259 male connector - a rotator and rotator control for the tri-band beam - a wire antenna (Windom) for 40/80M with a PL259 male connector Everything else needed is expected to be brought in by each=20 participating team themselves. Each WRTC2002 station has two radios (A and B). The radios must be=20 named as radio A and radio B before the contest starts. All QSOs must=20 be made on radio A while radio B can only be used for monitoring and=20 searching. Radio B can be changed to become radio A only in case of=20 malfunction, as determined by the referee.=20 Maximum output power is 100W. Band-pass filters are allowed for both radio A and radio B. Two networked PC=92s are allowed. (PC 1 at radio A, PC 2 at radio B.) The PC=92s must be named as PC 1 and PC 2 before the contest starts. Other station automation related equipment is allowed as such, but the=20 final station automation and auxiliary configuration should be presented=20 to the organizer's Technical Committee by 15-May-2002 for final review=20 and acceptance. Any necessary agreements for temporary importation of radios, PC=92s,=20 auxiliary equipment etc. will be made with Finnish Customs by the=20 organizer. Operating Operator A : exclusively controlling the radio A that makes all QSOs.=20 Operator B : monitoring the station logging, propagation and performing=20 the search function. Operator B cannot make any QSOs. Operator B=20 cannot control, drive or use radio A in any way. Operators A and B can change their functions at any time by physically=20 changing from one radio to the other radio.=20 Station Connections PC 1 can connect only to radio A and other station auxiliary equipment,=20 such as antenna switches and receive-only audio switching.=20 Only radio A can be keyed. =20 Of the two PC=92s only PC 1 can key the radio A. Use of different devices for reproduction of voice is allowed, but only at =20 radio A. The teams must provide any such devices and needed=20 interfaces themselves.=20 The audio of operator A must be shared with the referee by a female=20 type of 1/4" connector and/or Y-connector at radio A. Each team should=20 bring the needed connector for this audio sharing. What Else Can Be Done? PC 1 and PC 2 can be networked for the purpose of sharing log data=20 and for general communication between the operators. Operator A can share the audio of operator B. Antenna switches and band-pass filters can be operated by PC 1 and/or=20 radio A as well as manually. In case of malfunction, the malfunctioning equipment can be replaced=20 with spare equipment. What Cannot Be Done? Radio B cannot transmit.=20 Operator A cannot touch radio B. Operator B cannot touch radio A. =20 Operator B cannot share the audio of operator A. PC 2 cannot be conneced to radio A or radio B or antenna switches in=20 any way. PC 2 cannot control PC 1 or radio A in any way. Only operator A can have a microphone and a PC keying function. Auxiliary equipment such as PC=92s, microphone, CW and voice keyers cannot be connected in any way to radio B. No other antennas than the two antennas provided by the contest=20 organizer can be used. No other software than the logging software can be used. Note: An example design of the of the allowed audio sharing principle will be=20 shown on the WRTC2002 website. ------_Part_3c6178e0-0096-4659-010203040506-- -- Submissions: ncc@contesting.com Administrative requests: ncc-REQUEST@contesting.com Problems: owner-ncc@contesting.com From Nzharps@aol.com Wed Feb 6 19:18:02 2002 From: Nzharps@aol.com (Nzharps@aol.com) Date: Wed, 06 Feb 2002 14:18:02 EST Subject: [NCC] NCC Stuff #3 Message-ID: <138.8f72a25.2992db6a@aol.com> Hello to all, CW Sprint--This Saturday nite is the ever popular NA CW Sprint. Who wants to join in the fun? Anyone expressing an interest by 8pm EST Friday (2/8/02)will be placed on the NCC team. This will be a good time to brush up on your code skills prior to the ARRL DX test. ARRL Club Rules--The League has changed several rules that will impact club competition. 1. A club can now define it's "area" as either a 175 mile radius from a center point OR an individual ARRL section. NCC will retain it's 175 mile radius. 2. Membership elgiblilty criteria has been changed from attending two in-person club meetings to what ever an individual club defines as a "member in good standing." Our By-laws have always defined a member in good standing as any club member who has submitted TWO scores for NCC within a year for any of the 8 major contests(CQWW,ARRL DX, CQ WW WPX, etc). 3. Other changes are that a club member may operate the station of a non-member and have that score count for the club aggregate(assuming that station is within club territory). Also instead of 66% of a multi team being club members it now takes only 50% of a team to be members for that multi-op score to count for the club. These changes are issues that have been discussed by the CAC for some time and represent positive changes for the contesting communtity. Their impact on NCC, however, does not appear to be great. ARRL DX--It's almost Showtime folks!! You have one more week to get prepared for what hopefully will be another outstanding performance by NCC in the Medium Club class. Other clubs WILL be gunning for us this year and so we should make every effort to turn in another outstanding score. Finally dragged my butt out of bed and had some great runs including having FR5FD calling in. Missed an hour to take a nap and had a fairly good afternoon but my aching body needed a break so I laid down about 4:00 with strict instructions to my wife to not let me sleep more than an hour. Well, bless her soul, she let me sleep until 8:00!! She said I looked so tired and thought I needed some rest...I tried to explain I needed to be beaming toward JA but she just doesn't get it. Did work quite a few JA between 0100 and 0200 but could only dream about what I missed. Had some good runs Sunday but had too mcuh ground to make up. Stayed in the chair almost all day trying to reach 1000q but I guess it wasn't meant to be. I think this is the first contest I didn't work KP4?!?!? Very few Africans but was called Sunday afternoon by TN3IFB. The fist was kinda sloppy, maybe a bug, but I'm sure thats what I copied? Is he for real?? Anybody else work him? Well, try again in a few weeks to break 1000q single band. 73 Jamie WW3S -- Submissions: ncc@contesting.com Administrative requests: ncc-REQUEST@contesting.com Problems: owner-ncc@contesting.com From jgetz@pgh.net Mon Feb 18 00:26:35 2002 From: jgetz@pgh.net (John's Travel and Cruises) Date: Sun, 17 Feb 2002 19:26:35 -0500 Subject: [NCC] AD8J Score Message-ID: <003501c1b812$ed323fe0$0100a8c0@john> Hours of Operation: 20 band QSOs points mults ----------------------------------- 160 0 0 0 80 39 117 24 40 130 390 40 20 218 654 71 15 193 579 65 10 270 810 63 ----------------------------------- TOTAL 850 2550 263 SCORE: 670,650 John Getz, AD8J -- Submissions: ncc@contesting.com Administrative requests: ncc-REQUEST@contesting.com Problems: owner-ncc@contesting.com From nd8l@juno.com Mon Feb 18 09:46:39 2002 From: nd8l@juno.com (Ray C Fallen) Date: Mon, 18 Feb 2002 04:46:39 -0500 Subject: [NCC] ND8L Single Op/High Power Message-ID: <20020218.044650.-98693.1.nd8l@juno.com> 399 x 136 = 162,792 -- Submissions: ncc@contesting.com Administrative requests: ncc-REQUEST@contesting.com Problems: owner-ncc@contesting.com From k8dx@raex.com Mon Feb 18 12:53:49 2002 From: k8dx@raex.com (Scott Detloff K8DX) Date: Mon, 18 Feb 2002 07:53:49 -0500 Subject: [NCC] K8DX ARRL DX SOAB HP Message-ID: <002901c1b87b$4fe85940$301bc4d8@oemcomputer> This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0026_01C1B851.6648E6C0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable ARRL DX Contest, CW =20 Call: K8DX Operator(s):=20 Station:=20 Class: SOAB HP QTH: Ohio Operating Time (hrs): 24 Summary: Band QSOs Mults ---------------------- 160: 24 19 80: 271 59 40: 320 60 20: 680 54 15: 484 64 10: 808 67 ---------------------- Total: 2587 323 =3D 2,505,834 Club: NCC Comments: Started the contest with only one radio, with one on its way back to me = after=20 being repaired. These were the best conditions ever from the Midwest, and we felt that the low noise and long high-band opennings greatly reduced our geographic disadvantage. This is an experiment and if you guys like it I'll keep it up. The plan is to keep the 'running total' claimed scores linked to the site so we can see how we are doing. I 'believe' I have everyones score up that has reported. If I missed you-lemme know. If you haven't sent your info yet-bad contester-bad contester. You'll be interested to know that after the CW weekend we have a total of ?????? (You didn't really think I would tell you?) Thanks to our Web Guru, W8CAR, we have a rough guess as to our club score. A few scores were missed by the "Guru", so please stand by for the additions of K2UA, W3IQ and N8PW. This will add another 6meg to an already FB score. Check out www.qsl.net/ncc for score updates. In an effort to further upgrade our web presence, W8CAR is asking for any members who have personal web sites related to radio, contesting, etc. to forward your URL to him. He can create links from the club roster to your site. Send them to w8car@buckeye-express.com The K8AZ m/s crew was unanimous in agreeing that conditions this past weekend were possibly the best ever. We were able to run EU on 20m all night BOTH nights. Our 40m score suffered, but hour after hour of 100+ rates made us forget about what we were missing on 40. In addition to that, other high points were: outstanding JA activity, 15m open to EU all night on Saturday (not for quantity, but it was cool to hear) and very quiet low bands on Friday. Our quest to win the ARRL medium club competition is only half way finished. The really hard road lies ahead. Splatter, split frequency operating and more lids, kids and space cadets (homage to W2OY of yesteryear) that one can shake a stick at can be found on an HF band near you next weekend. March 2-3 is the SSB weekend that will make or break our most excellent (tnx Bill and Ted) ARRL adventure. Start looking for those mike's now. Some of us have to start now to find it by contest time. Got any interesting tid bits from CW weekend. High points, low points? Interesting openings, observations? Post them to ncc@contesting.com I look forward to reading them. 73, Ron, K8NZ -- Submissions: ncc@contesting.com Administrative requests: ncc-REQUEST@contesting.com Problems: owner-ncc@contesting.com From jgetz@pgh.net Sun Feb 24 17:29:24 2002 From: jgetz@pgh.net (John's Travel and Cruises) Date: Sun, 24 Feb 2002 12:29:24 -0500 Subject: [NCC] AD8J CQ 160 SSB Score Message-ID: <005401c1bd58$ce779640$0100a8c0@john> Call used: AD8J Location: PA Category: Single Op Mode: PHONE Power: 100W Exchanged Information: AD8J RST PA band QSOs points ------------------------- 160 111 251 ------------------------- TOTAL 111 251 X 30 multipliers = 7,530 John Getz, AD8J John's Travel and Cruises 3905 Monet Court South Allison Park, PA 15101-3220 Telephone: 412-487-4733 Fax: 412-487-0338 -- Submissions: ncc@contesting.com Administrative requests: ncc-REQUEST@contesting.com Problems: owner-ncc@contesting.com From k8dx@raex.com Sun Feb 24 19:49:18 2002 From: k8dx@raex.com (Scott Detloff K8DX) Date: Sun, 24 Feb 2002 14:49:18 -0500 Subject: [NCC] K8DX CQ WW 160M SSB SOHP Message-ID: <003401c1bd6c$59b471c0$ce1ec4d8@oemcomputer> This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0031_01C1BD42.6FFC9540 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable CQ 160-Meter Contest, SSB =20 Call: K8DX Operator(s):=20 Station:=20 Class: SO HP QTH: Ohio Operating Time (hrs): 6:06 =20 QSOs: 477 States/Provinces: 48 Countries: 25 Score: 96,944 Comments: Wasn't supposed to be home this weekend, but my daughter was sick so=20 we stayed home :-) Conditions seemed really great to Europe the short time I was on.
