Fellow contesters:
It is with enormous sadness that I offer the following news. Ron Harps, K8NZ, one of the Charter Members of both MRRC and NCC, suffered the ultimate tragedy on the last day of 2007. On New Year's Eve, at approximately 7 pm pst, Ron's younger daughter Shannon was murdered at knifepoint outside her Seattle condominium. The killer remains at large. Details on this horrible occurrence can be found at http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/345660_stab02.html <https://mail.taftlaw.com/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/345660_stab02.html>
Ron and his XYL Angela, KC8FOD, are devastated. Also surviving is Shannon's older sister, Melissa, who resides in Columbus. The family is currently in Seattle. No arrangements have been made.
Shannon was 31 years old and lived alone. She was a gentle soul, with a warm sense of humor. She devoted her life to environmental causes and worked as an organizer for the Sierra Club, one of the nation's oldest and most respected environmental advocacy organizations. Her death leaves a cavernous void, not only in the Harps family, but also in the environmental movement to which she devoted her life.
I anticipate that a fund will be established to assist the family with expenses and to mark Shannon's memory. Details will follow once the family's wishes are known.
Well-wishers can send a note to the family c/o Ron's e-mail at nzharps at aol.com. Close friends can call Ron's cell at (440) 477-0142.
Please take a moment and have a good thought for Shannon and for her survivors.
Rest in peace, Shannon.
Tom, K8AZ
