Comments:
Before the contest I made several posts to area clubs promoting the VHF
test as
the absolutely best weekend of the year to try six meters. I hope people
did
not turn on their radios on Saturday, think I was nuts, and never returned
on
Sunday.
Saturday was boring, only a couple of brief but not very loud openings to
FL
where the guys were so inundated with callers that it was hard getting
through.
So I decided with a clear conscience to take off for a 65 mile bike ride on
Sunday morning. After the ride, a shower, and a nap it was 21Z until got
on.
What a difference! I don't think I've ever heard six open to so many
places at
the same time. As noted by other southerners, the opening was covering
only the
upper half of the USA and nearby Canada, other than a reasonable number of
guys
in AZ.
Good CW activity on six. Not much activity or conditions on the higher
bands.
Missed a number of nearby grids on the high bands. Not a single qso in
FN01 80
miles east of here. Missed usually easy FN00 on two meters and above as
W3SO
had antenna problems and was six meters only.
A great Sunday evening, with activity up to the end, including four new
mults in
the last 10 minutes (W3CCX in FN21 on 2/222/432 and FN41 on six).
Hope we can get another opening even close to this one for the CQ VHF
contest
in July. I may do a low key rove in EN90/FN00/FN01 for that one.
