Happy New Year NCC & MRRC Friends,
The January CW NAQP is just 9 days away and in a very timely fashion the latest issue of NCJ brings the results of the August 2013 NAQP.
As you will recall, the scheme that I put forward last summer (and which seemed to be acceptable to most) was that the ops with the highest scores in August would earn places on the top teams in the next NAQP. Below I have reproduced the final scores of our members who participated in the August test. We had what I believe was a record-breaking 25 members submitting logs! These scores determine the team makeup for the upcoming January 11 NAQP, with the top five scoring stations earning spots on the MRRC/NCC First Team, and so forth. If you'd like to be on the First Team next time, get on the air on January 11 and earn your place!
Before listing the scores, I would like to report how our teams did in the Team Competition in August. In a word: FANTASTIC! We fielded five teams, two of which made the top ten. Here are our teams and their places in the rankings. Note that 71 teams submitted scores.
Lions 5
Tigers 10
Eagles 34
Bears 41
Hawks 52
Our main rival in the team competition was the Northern California Contest Club. The NCCC managed to field 8 teams, and their combined scores totaled 1,969,523 versus 1,793,522 for us, so we have to say that overall they outdid us. Their NCCC#1 team (consisting of N5KO, W7RN, N6RO, K9YC and N3ZZ) came in first with 911,927 points versus 771,051 for our Lions. However, if you look at just the top ten, or even the top 20, we outscored them by a wide margin!
It also should be mentioned that the Society of Midwest Contesters managed to field 9 teams composed of 39 ops. Although their combined score totaled only 1,279,670 points, well behind us, it is clear that they have the potential to become a major rival to us if their members just put in a couple more hours in the contest.
A couple more showings like this and people are going to start noticing us. All we need is a little more participation and we may be able to claim that we are the overall winners in this competition!

Congratulations to our overall winner, Andy, K2TJ, who made 943 contacts and 189 multipliers. Special mention should also be made of NA8V's huge mult total of 206. According to my calculations, only 17 other single ops entering the contest made more mults. What's your secret, Greg?
In case you didn't work it out, Andy averaged 94.3 Q/hour. There aren't many contests where you can keep up that kind of rate. Operating in the multi-two category, NX5M made 619 contacts on 20 meters alone, so there were at least this many stations participating, each of which may be contacted on six bands. That's a lot of potential contacts. The leaders are averaging 100-110 per hour and rates are likely to get better and better. This is a really fun event! Please get on the air and help us realize our potential in this contest and make our fellow contesters take notice.
Please check your schedules and let me know your plans. Based on those plans, I will put together our teams, keep you updated, and register the teams just before the contest.
And I hope to see many of you at the K8AZ/K8MR bashes over the weekend.
73, Hal W1NN
