News from KP4...


I am part of the volunteer disaster team from ARRL working in conjunction with the Red Cross. I've been down here almost two weeks and have been all over the Island and out to Culebra. Currently in San Juan.


Unless you have been here you can not imagine how bad it is. CNN and the others have not been up in the mountains...I have. The roads are still filled with metal roofs, hundreds of power poles, cable, transmission lines, trees etc. Many of the roads are partially or completely washed away. Many are blocked by boulders and landslides.


On our excursion to drop off a radio op at Lares, we headed down one road at 10 MPH for a half hour only to find a landslide had taken out a house and 1500 feet of road down to the bottom of a valley. Many of the people have been isolated by the landslides in the mountains. In the past two days there has been an additional 7-8 inches of rain causing washouts and landslides in the mountains.


Over 1.2 million power poles (many of them concrete) are been broken and fallen over. Most of San Juan has no power and I have seen four traffic lights that are functioning. Driving in San Juan is always crazy, but picture a city like Cleveland with no lights for traffic control. Every intersection reminds me of a figure 8 race at a racetrack. It is realistic to think that the places up in the hills with be without power for a couple of years.


I'll be flying back tomorrow to JFK, and then to Tampa. it is near impossible to get off the island and I got the last seat on that flight and was glad to get it.


Then devastation is so widespread...i doubt the island will ever really recover. Keep the people of KP4 in your prayers.
