Comments:
This is a favorite event of mine and I usually hit it pretty hard, but
with my
80M dipole completely out of service (yet again!) and my tribander
destroyed by
storms, I was down to three low dipoles (20, 40 and 160) for this year,
so it
did not make sense to try to operate full time.
The 160 dipole allows me to work a few locals on 80, but nobody more
than around
1,000 miles away could hear me. There were a lot of pretty loud EU stations
available but calling them was a waste of time.
40 is my best band and I was able to run quite a bit. It's funny that I
have no
trouble working things like P3 and 4X on 40 in the summer but they are
really
difficult in the winter on that band.
20 is tough with a low dipole but it is not too hard to work the top
layer of EU
stations when the band is open. I managed one JA but the JARL station
couldn't
hear me.
15 never seemed to really open up to Europe for me and a lot of stations
just
couldn't pull me in. I heard some weak JAs there in the afternoon but they
couldn't hear me. 10 was a pleasant surprise with really strong NA
signals but
no EU and nothing beyond Zone 11 for me.
The NU1AW and W1AW crews did a great job. W1AW/KL7 was easy to find on
15 and
20. They were 569 on 10 for over an hour calling CQ but they couldn't
hear me
or anyone else. But they really tried. I never heard them on 40. NU1AW/5 was
everywhere. I got them on 5 bands. Unfortunately they went QRT right after I
heard them on 160 so I didn't get to work them on a noisy Top Band.
This is a rough contest to operate remote from Japan, where the start
time is 9
PM. Hopefully I will be back in Ohio for the next one.
