Comments:
I operated my station in Ohio from Japan via remote. This contest is
mostly a
daytime event for me here in Japan, so it's not hard on the body unless
you want
to produce a big score, in which case you must sit in front of the radio
for 24
hours working 2-pointers at 30/hr. I just couldn't get enthusiastic
about doing
that this year, so I decided to mostly look for DX.
It sure was the wrong year for that! I tuned and tuned but I could hear very
little DX. It did not help to listen to the East Coast running EU
stations that
I could not even detect. Last year I worked 30 countries and 40 ten-pointers
but 12 countries and nine ten-pointers was all I could manage this year
despite
putting in a lot more hours searching. The Caribbean stations were weak all
weekend.
It's been five months since I've seen my antenna so I don't know what
condition
it's in. The SWR jumps around, not a good sign. But almost everyone I called
could hear me, so it's working. QRN was S7-S9 most of the contest but even
without it I don't think I would have heard much EU there seemed to be
very few
pileups.
I only worked a few stations on the first day so I was hoping to have a
nice run
on day two. I was rewarded with a 163Q hour Saturday evening so that was
fun,
but I seem to recall a 190 hour in a recent 160 test, suggesting that
participation was a little light this year.
160 is always interesting. Thanks to the sponsors and the participants
for the
fun. How lucky we are to have this great band all to ourselves today. I
still
remember the mess that 160 was in the days of LORAN.
