*Episode 137 (Parts One and Two): K9W Wake Atoll; FT5ZM Amsterdam Island
DXpeditions*

Thanks to a suggestion from *Scott K0MD*, HamRadioNow gets into some
territory we haven't covered before: /*DXpeditions!*/

No, we didn't go on one (not sure if that's "sadly" or not... these can
be tough as well as fun). We just went to the *Charlotte Hamfest
<http://www.w4bfb.org/hamfest2014/index.php>* and shot the "slide shows"
from the *Wake Atoll K9W* trip, narrated by Lou Dietrich N2TU, and the
*FT5ZM Amaterdam Island* trip, narrated by Bob Allphin K4UEE.

Note that these aren't "DXpedition videos" – they are live talks to some
really cool PowerPoint slides, by some well-known DXers who were there.
Lou didn't mention any video for Wake Atoll. Bob Allphin has produced
many excellent videos, and there will be one coming from this trip. But
he graciously gave me permission to produce this program from his slide
talk (as he says, they're "completely different").

Watch them now on our web site: *Ham**RadioNow.tv* <http://HamRadioNow.tv>

*Let me know if you don't want to be on this list*. Just reply, and
change the subject to "Drop Me from HamRadioNow" (that'll catch my
attention). I don't sell, lend, give away or otherwise disclose the
HamRadioNow mailing list, and you'll only see notices of new programs.

We've also got a *Yahoo Group
<https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/HamRadioNow/info>* where I announce
the programs, and I encourage you to comment on and discuss them there.

*Side note:* I got some email from Burt K1OIK. He was kind of flaming me
for producing the long */CQ/* interview in Episode 136, and not editing
it down to short sound bites. I get comments both ways, but I choose to
produce full-length, mostly unedited interviews that give you the full
context of the conversation. Editing them would take even more time, and
I'd rather either start working on the next program, or chill out on the
couch watching the tube with a couple of cats lying on me.*

He thought the interview was all softball (he called me a "terrible
interviewer"), and no, I didn't ask Rich if/ CQ/ was broke or about to
go out of business. Rich gave somewhat carefully couched responses to
what I did ask, but it the painful decisions were all there. Economy bad
= we're out of cash. Advertising down (and readership down a little) =
we can't afford to keep producing the magazines (CQ-VHF, PopComm and
WorldRadio). You had to read more between the lines to get that very
late publication of a print version of CQ, while the online versions
were more or less on time, probably meant they couldn't pay the printer
and/or the post office. You might not get that from sound bites.

Burt proudly pointed to the fact that his videos get far greater view
counts than mine. And it's true! Mine hover in the 1000 to 2000 range,
and his often exceed 10,000 (though I have more YouTube subscribers than
he does). Well, Honey-boo-boo gets a bigger audience than the CBS News,
too (actually, I don't know if that's true, but I'm guessing it is). His
videos typically run around 10 minutes, and mine about an hour, and
that's his biggest point, besides admittedly being a blunt, opinionated
jerk. As it happened, just after his email arrived, I got a comment from
a viewer thanking me for the full-length interview. I forwarded that to
Bert, and his reply was something like "even a blind pig can find a nut
now and then"... or something like that. He copied a half-dozen plaudits
that he's received. I could, too (from you guys), but I didn't.

If I have a point to make, it's this: if Bert gets 10x+ the audience I
do, should I become more like Bert? (That's what he's suggesting). Is
that what hams want in their media? If he is getting the audience, and
I'm not, what's he doing right?

I think some of it is still the "awareness factor." There are a lot of
hams who don't know HamRadioNow exists. And you can help. Just let a few
other hams know what you've found so they can sample our programs. Club
meetings, nets, mailing lists, web sites, links (your own YouTube
videos). Or we can let Bert be our spokesman to the world.

**Sound bites, anyone?* In general media, there are tons of shows that
take sound bites from other, longer shows for their own commentary. As
far as I know, nobody has done that in ham media except me! My programs
are licensed for re-use. You don't even have to ask me. YouTube has
tools to edit a video and put it on your own channel (and all mine
permit that). Maybe somebody wants to take the initiative to carve some
of my shows down to size. Please do!
