Hi Ed,

The contest logging is an additional feature in wsjt-x for basic logging
only. It uses a database (db.sqlite) for that. There is no need to
manage directly that database as all needed functions are available at
the File menu:
1. Reset Cabrillo log... 2. Export Cabrillo log...
Before a contest just reset the previous log and after the contest
export log in Cabrillo format.

If for some reason the database contains some data from a previous
contest, then that data can be edited out of the Cabrillo text format
file. The header information is contest dependent and sometimes a
careful study of contest rules is required. The format of the Cabrillo
is very strict and manual editing needs some knowledge.

In most contests you want to see whether a station is worked before .
There are many contest logging programs that provide that information as
defined in the contest rules. There could be band, mode, time, locator
etc. based rules for worked before, which require potentially complex
management during the contest.

WSJT-X contains an independent feature useful in many contest that use a
simple definition of the worked before rule, basically worked before in
the whole contest or worked before per band or per mode or locator. It
is the normal worked before functionality of the WSJT-X and is
controlled by the Colors functionality. Information for the worked
before is in the wsjtx_log.adi file (it is read into wsjt-x at start of
the program and updated at each QSO logging). To use it for a contest
some manual actions are requires:
1. Renaming or resetting of the wsjtx_log.adi file before the contest.
Wsjt-x will generate a new one at the logging of the first contest QSO.
Note by resetting you will lose all worked before information in wsjt-x.
2. Bringing back the original wsjtx_log.adi and possible adding the
contest QSOs into it after the contest.
The wsjtx_log.adi is a text file, but it has a strict although flexible
format.
The management of the contest database and the wsjtx_log.adi files are
independent of each other in the wsjt-x. There is no internal linkage
between that database and wsjtx_log.adi files expect that the same QSOs
are added into both.

In addition wsjt-x produces a human readable output file named
wsjtx.log. It cannot be used as an input for worked before in wsjt-x. It
is really an output only.

So for your proposal a simple comment, the wsjt-x is a communication
program not a contest logging program as such. There are so many
different contests that use various rules that a linking to a wsjt-x
Special activity contest names is not a simple issue. Any "automatic"
generation of a contest.adi would be a challenge and would require
unnecessary need for updates. I assume that just generating a new
contest.adi would not be enough and users would require further contest
based support as well. If the contest.adi file would be enough for you,
then the renaming of the current wsjtx_log.adi should be simple enough, hi!

Sorry for a long discussion, I cannot say it in a few words.

Thanks for the response. well I guess I didn't do that...lol next time....

It would be nice if wsjt, carved out a new contest log since you have to
select the contest in advanced features... and leave the log.adi intact,
that would just then add contests.adi...

Same for the ARRL digi contests etc
