Larry, this is the post you missed:
http://dayton.akorn.net/pipermail/tentec/2003-October/038631.html
I missed it also or I would not have used 1.365 for the contest.
I did get one unsolicited report of bad audio and, while we had
the solar flare on Sunday, I heard Walt W0CP testing and asked
his opinion since he is an audio guru I've known for years (he's
also the Rocky Mountain ARRL Director). He immediately noted
the raspy consonants and we tried several different SP, MIC and
EQ settings but could not make it disappear. This morning I
saw the above post and forwarded it to Walt so he would not
think all Orions sounded so bad. Walt did make a suggestion
that the Heil HC-4 might not be a good cartridge to use and to
try an HC-5 if I had one. Then I could adjust the TX EQ to
emphasize highs (like the HC-4 does) for contests but use less
or no equalization for ragchewing.
I'm not doing anything until TT issues another firmware
revision to correct the problem introduced in 1.364 and 1.365.
I'm frankly surprised that they told you to return the unit but
they may not have been aware of the firmware problem at the
time you talked with them.
73, Bill W4ZV
