Here's the answer from TT Service:


Dear Joe:
 
The internal contrast needs to be set. This control is accessible 
through a small hole on the bottom right of the front panel (looking 
from the front) with the bottom cover removed. Set the internal contrast 
to 50% and adjust this control for proper contrast.

    John, thanks for your input.  Well, the low contrast setting still
    persists (You should pardon the expression.), but it looks like the
    weird behavior of the selection (Main) knob must arise from a faulty
    encoder or the like.  The selection process works fine with the
    remote pod's knob.
