That might be some explanation for the short life I experience with 
CFL's as I live in Clearwater, FL.  The Tampa Bay area is the lightning 
capital of the US.  We experience an inordinate number of lightning 
strikes and, even in good weather, power surges.

I need to update the UPS for my computer.  Many of the surges are so 
fast that the USP is not able to switch over.  It beeps and clicks to 
let me know there was a surge but it doesn't stop the computer from 
shutting down.  These things are so brief that they don't phase my 
wife's computer that doesn't have a UPS.
