Ever since I acquired it around 2003, I've used a Kenwood TH-F6A VHF/UHF 
talkie in this manner.  As I recall, the AM detector is available on 
some bands but not others.  Above 10 MHz the antenna defaults to the 
internal loopstick, but can be switched to the SMA. Above 10 MHz it 
defaults to the SMA.
