If you haven't tried this yet--to get some directivity during your search, increase the frequency being used and decrease the receiver gain until you almost lose the signal.  Then search again and repeat as needed.

The last time I was down there it seemed like it was coming from all directions.  He has the MFJ handheld unit, but he hasn't had much luck with it.
