[RFI] Tescun PL-660 Antenna

Dale,

If you have a power company willing to come out and fix all those noise sources you found, more power to you! Not everyone's so lucky! And if you find several, but miss the one that is your actual noise source, getting them back out could get tough later on.

Something to realize, a ham station hearing power line noise is not hearing every noise source that is on the power lines. Sometimes the antenna is located in the "null" of the standing wave of a noise. So fixing that source does nothing to reduce your noise.

John also might be chasing a source other than power line noise.

You really don’t need the complexity or bulk of a loop antenna to find power line noise. A walkie-talkie on the aircraft band (130 Mhz AM) and two legs plus a general direction found with the directional yagi on the tower will give a general idea where the noise is, but use 10 meters. I’ve found lots of noise poles, transformers and insulators using that method and my two feet, a pair of binoculars is good to have along too in order to inspect hardware from the ground and look for rotten pole tops.

Keep it simple

Yes! A loop antenna.

Depends on the antenna.

I have a constant noise source that is loud on 10m and 15m. I got a beam
heading and then I walked along the main road where the power lines are
with my Tescun PL-660. I listened on 10m using the built in antenna set
for DX sensitivity and outside of an inconsistent short noise burst I
heard nothing. How close to the noise do I need to be to pick it up with
this receiver and built in antenna? Is there a better antenna that I can
use with the Tescun for locating the source?
