I retired as a computer systems project manager for a multinational
corporation. How you deal with any company depends on management's
mindset. Small businesses are usually quite different than large companies.
When explaining RFI to companies, you have to be able to show them just
how the non compliant devices and noise cost them money, or be a safety
issue and it is almost essential to be able to show (document) how much
it is costing them, or the risk. This is an area where you need to deal
in specifics, not generalities and THAT is rarely easy.
Most larger companies want to be good neighbors, so "sometimes"
approaching the problem from that angle rather than cost, "might" be
appropriate.
If you can't show them specifically, how and how much the RFI is costing
them, you'll be wasting time and that costs money. Waste their time
without being properly prepared and you may not get a second chance. At
least have someone who knows how to speak to management.
Dress appropriately for the type of business. Some are suits with ties.
Others are simply casual. TYPICALLY the larger the company the more
formal the attire. What ever, the appearance can be very important!
It's rare, but best if you have someone on the inside, high enough that
management will listen to them.
