[RFI] RFI from variable speed swimming pool pumps

Yes, very much so. Only recently has the Canadian owned utility company monopoly even allowed homeowners to use solar to reduce demand on their inefficient diesel powered generating system and previously had no cogeneration buy-back program.
I’m looking into solar as our next project down there but I’m even more concerned about the RFI potential than the pool pump. “Properly designed (RFI-wise)” is the key.
Stay tuned!!

Pool alone presently costs almost $300/month for power. A two speed doesn’t have enough flexibility to optimize energy usage while providing adequate circulation and filtering. The new VS drives are also inherently more efficient so I’ll just have to deal with any RFI that results. Most of our renters are not hams in any event and if push comes to shove we’ll switch off or to the backup fixed speed pump during a contest etc. Hopefully line filters and ferrites will keep things manageable.
