I've used top line ASUS modems for nearly a decade with no issues. I run 
legal limit 160-6M. Nearest TX antennas are about 150 ft. My only wired 
Ethernet is a short cable between the cable modem and the router.

The issue you describe can probably be fixed with good common mode 
chokes on power and signal cables to the router and/or the modem. See 
app notes on Killing RX Noise and HF transmitting chokes on my website. 
Thanks to reciprocity, the chokes that work for on3 application will 
work for others in the same frequency range. k9yc.com
