I hold an AM pocket-sized receiver near the mains in mysuburban home with underground AC mains (utilities) and I hear overwhelming white noise that degrades the SNR on major stations in this market even ... different tones and rep-rate cyclic noise can be found at different spots. One known source is a pool pump, no longer a simple induction motor, but something more exotic a couple doors down. Occasionally it goes off, and things clear up noticeably, though not completely.
On weaker in-the-market stations I have to find the right position for the pocket portable AM receiver for a reasonable SNR (w/o the white noise and cyclic tones.)
