As I am sure everyone knows, CQWW-SSB is coming up next weekend. This
contest is known affectionately as "The Big One", undoubtedly because it has
the highest mass participation and it kickstarts the new contest season.
(note -Real contesters know that CQWW-RTTY was the official start last
month!:))
By now you should be well into preparation mode for this event. In case you
haven't given it a thought, here is my simple checklist of activities you
should per4form over the next few days.
Here is my check list for the coming week. If you have other items to share
with the group please do.
1. Prepare the contest logger program. This means updating the software
to the latest version.
2. Update your country files (WL_CTY.DAT)
3. If you use it, update the CHECK PARTIAL (master.dta)
4. Read the contest rules so that you know
a. start/stop times.
b. The scoring - bonuses, multipliers etc
c. the exchange,
d. off time requirements
5. Review your previous years scores and logs. What worked, what didn't
work in terms of strategy
6. Decide what category to enter. Assisted, high power, single band
etc.
7. Determine your goal - What do you want to achieve? Win the world,
country? Province? Set a record? Surpass a number of QSO? Make it realistic
and achievable.
8. Set a strategy to achieve your goals.
a. How many hours can you spend operating?
b. What bands can you work?
c. What is the solar forecast?
9. Advise your spouse, family etc, of your plans
10. Plan your menu (food and drinks) for the contest if you are planning
an extended BIC attempt
11. Set up your voice keyer if you are using it
12. Ensure your audio levels are OK, no overdriving, do an on-air check
with a friend.
13. Test everything
14. Do the Windows updates on your computer
15. The day before, restart your computer and start your logger.
16. Test everything
Don't leave your prep to the morning (or evening) of the contest!!!!!
If you are travelling to operate a superstation or if you are working
remotes, then you will have to add the necessary steps for those plans.
Please share your list of planning steps with the group!
Good Luck
Ed
