Yes, Tom, I was aware of the rules and knew I could not work the VE3's
(except the HQ station, which I did). The additional contacts would have
been nice because my QSO total would have increased by at least 20%. I
actually *did* work 3 VE3's who called me when I was "running" but I did
so just to get them out of the way without having to explain. That's
what I do for any contest, usually, even for dupes.
I worked so few stations in any particular call area that all but one of
my 46 good Qs were worth 25 points. The only call area that had a five
point QSO was G, which surprised me very much. I would have expected
that I would have worked far more VE7s but it didn't work out that way.
I was happy with my total once I recognized the strange nature of the
scoring system. :>)
A tri-bander would have worked wonders, with at least a dozen additional
Qs that could have been had from various DX entities. With the G5RV and
the tri-bander driven element they just simply could not hear me. I
fought for ZL3PAH, for example, but he could not pull me out. Other
stations I could hear were very weak and gave them a shot without really
anticipating a QSO. I hope to have the A3S up for next year's
Commonwealth Contest!
I will say that the folks who could hear me must have very good stations.

Jack, VE3RUA/W6NF
