The law of unintended consequences has really reared its
head on this one. However, I'm probably to blame for not
discussing further the reason behind the question and what I
was considering as illogical. Nonetheless, the responses
were interesting and thought provoking. Meaningless RSTs
are an issue with the CW (and perhaps the SSB) contesters
too.
Anyway, what I was wondering was the, to me, illogic of
placing a space between the hyphens separating numerals.
Since the numerals and hyphens are preceded by the FIGS
character and most systems are USOS, this exchange seems to
be more time consuming than necessary. However, perhaps it
was adopted because the station using it may have operating
under adverse conditions and thought such an arrangement
would result in fewer requests for a repeat? I noticed many
stations sending something like 599-121 121 (which I adopted
too) and which seemed to me to be a good compromise between
speed and insuring good copy the first transmission.
Sorry for the confusion.
