Ty, penned, [BARTG]"...which is inconsequential since it's a relatively
insignificant contest of little interest to most serious competitors. I
predict it will stay that way."
"Tyler K3MM... Great Fun! One of the better RTTY contest of the year" BARTG
results of 1997. Ty was first in the U.S. that year.
It's always interesting to talk about rule's, and rule changes. Rules on
the most part were made for a reason. When rules are modified they do have
vast implications. But people -- in the case of the ARRL the MSC, always
seem to "fix the rules". Mostly they tend to do it to make their contests
the same. But in doing so they always have far reaching implications.
But done is done as they say.
It is interesting to see all of the rule changes that consistantly and
constantly are discussed and taking place in other types of contests. e.g.
changes in the 160 CQ to lower the number of hours, etc., etc. No one seems
too distressed about these changes which would of course also modify decade
old records. Fun thing about RTTY is that there is NO decade old record.
Each is usually changed yearly these days with all the increased
participation.
I do take exception to comments about BARTG, it predates all of the U.S.
RTTY contests, BARTG came long before CQ/DJ WW, WPX, ARRL RTTY Roundup. It
has a very long and rich history, has a great committee and society behind
it. The craddles of RTTY contesting are BARTG, CARTG, ANARTS, WAE, and
VOLTA perhaps its best if we don't forget it.
But back to rules. Fun to talk about but changes do have effects and adding
more catagories is most often not possible. It add's plaques, certificates,
and space in magazines. Most often the changes don't increase
participation, increase competitiveness, or really even make things better.
Take adding M2 to CQWW, Just another small catagory probably M/M should have
been eliminated, but...don't look now. M2 is now in all CQ contests, I
believe. Thought of by K5DJ, put in, and now its spread from RTTY to CW and
SSB in CQWW. So keep on talking about changes you want, and keep on trying
to convince someone else sometimes changes do happen.
My new rule change opinion is this, "Does it make the contest more fun for
more people?"
